BUNS AND BABES WELCOME

Dozy Dora's kitten.

Playing with a little kitten

Dozy Dora lost her knitting.

Before too long the cat went missing,

leaving Dora clucking, fussing.

If her hearing had been better

- curled up in a half-finished mitten.

Oh where is that knitting?

she swore and she cussed,

pulling her hair until it was mussed.

It was not until late the next morning

she looked in a drawer

for a shilling to pay a man at the door

and there was the knitting

and in it the kitten,

the end of the wool all caught up in its claws!

Carefully she unravelled it,

anxious not to make it skit

but intent as she was on her lip-biting task

she quite forgot the waiting milkman

and rap, rap, rap, he struck her knocker

and up jumped Puss, his two eyes round.

In a flash he was out of the drawer

running as he hit the ground,

half a mile outside the pound,

Dozy Dora's unravelled mitten

trailing out behind him.

But at least, thought Dora,

he was safe and sound.

Putting out a bowl of milk

(after paying off the churlish merchant)

she found his little bell and rang it.

Presently the cat came back

with half a moiien wrapped around it.

Oh dear, said Dozy Dora

and put down the old tin mug of coconut milk

and Baileys she was drinking with a loud clatter.

Try as she might she just couldn't remember

who she had been making the mitten for

but eventualy decided it didn't really matter...

As it was they were for herself,

to try to stop her fingers aching

and to help her take hot cake

from out of the oven

(she was very good at baking).

She remembered eventually of course,

just after the main course,

her guests all now quite anxious for pudding.

Quickly she sent our the cat,

in his best frock and cap

to buy what he could for a shilling.

Imagine her stare when he flew down the stairs

with a tray of cup-cakes and eclairs.

"I was saving them for a rainy day," he purred.

"Is it raining then?" Dora asked the kitten,

"you might have told me earlier,

I might have remembered to bring in the washing."

But the clever kitten had already done it

and do you know what?

He had even finished knitting the mitten.

Dear old Dozy Dora and her helpful kitten!

FELICIA AND THE

POT OF PINKS

Once upon a time...

There was a poor labourer who, feeling that he had not much longer to live, wished to divide his possessions between his son and daughter, whom he loved dearly.
So he called them to him, and said: "Your mother brought me as her dowry two stools and a straw bed; I have, besides, a hen, a pot of pinks, and a silver ring, which were given me by a noble lady who once lodged in my poor cottage. When she went away she said to me:

"`Be careful of my gifts, good man; see that you do not lose the ring or forget to water the pinks. As for your daughter, I promise you that she shall be more beautiful than anyone you ever saw in your life; call her Felicia, and when she grows up give her the ring and the pot of pinks to console her for her poverty.' Take them both, then, my dear child," he added, "and your brother shall have everything else."

The two children seemed quite contented, and when their father died they wept for him, and divided his possessions as he had told them. Felicia believed that her brother loved her, but when she sat down upon one of the stools he said angrily:
"Keep your pot of pinks and your ring, but let my things alone. I like order in my house."

Felicia, who was very gentle, said nothing, but stood up crying quietly; while Bruno, for that was her brother's name, sat comfortably by the fire. Presently, when sup- per-time came, Bruno had a delicious egg, and he threw the shell to Felicia, saying:

"There, that is all I can give you; if you don't like it, go out and catch frogs; there are plenty of them in the marsh close by." Felicia did not answer, but she cried more bitterly than ever, and went away to her own little room. She found it filled with the sweet scent of the pinks, and, going up to them, she said sadly:
"Beautiful pinks, you are so sweet and so pretty, you are the only comfort I have left. Be very sure that I will take care of you, and water you well, and never allow any cruel hand to tear you from your stems."

I wish that I could fly as high as a kite,
as it travels to the sky.
I wish that I could walk on the moon,
stay there till the afternoon.
I wish that I could stand so tall,
and reach for the sun for my ball.

I wish I could dance on my toes,
a ballerina, sweet repose.
I wish I could sing like a bird,
loud then soft, but always heard.
I wish I could write rhymes like Dodie,
some for Jane, some for Jody.

I wish the world would ring with love,
happiness and turtle doves.
I wish that life was so easy that,
we have no more pain, and no more fuss.

with no more tears, and no more cries.

JELLYFISH IN SEARCH OF A MONKEY

THIS IS A TALE THEY TELL IN JAPAN OF THE ORIGIN OF THE JELLYFISH
WE FIND STRANDED ON OUR BEACHES !

        Long, long ago, instead of soft tentacles, he had a bunch of legs as graceful as a greyhound's, ans as for his figure the proudest pig in Ireland could not vie with him for firmly arched, well covered   ribs.
Naturally, he was the administration of all the other fish, for, besides being nimble and stately, he was the only deep sea thing that could walk on land as well as swim in the water. Unfortunately, he was like too many human beings, who simply rely on their good looks to make them popular, and do not trouble to develop their brains, therefore this handsome creature was exceedingly stupid.
        One day Jellyfish was strolling about the shore of a coral island, when a flying fish shot out of the waves, and told him that he was summoned to the palace of the Dragon King.
        As he approached the audience chamber he could hear by the clanking of golden scales that the Dragon King was pacing about in the greatest agitation, but his brow cleared as he caught sight of Jellyfish.
" I thought you would never come ! " he cried. " And the Queen gets worse every hour ! Listen, the doctors say that she can be cured by swallowing the liver of a wild monkey. You are the only fish who can go ashore. You must swim, as you have never swum in your life, find the bit of land that has monkeys on it and then persuade the monkey to return with you. If you succeeed I will make you Grand Warden of the Indian Ocean, with the right to a coronet of pearl shell and cowrie. "
        Jellyfish hardly stopped to bow; in a very little while he was wading out of the breakers on to a lovely island of palm trees and scarlet hibiscus. The first animal he saw was a small grey monkey with a friendly countenance. Jellyfish hailed him gladly :

" Ho, you Master Monkey there ! I am sent by the Dragon King of all the seas; to ask that you come to the palace. "
The monkey's shrivelled face beamed with pleasure. Never had he dreamed of receiving a royal invitation, and he was all to ready to accept this.
For a little while Jellyfish, with the monkey on his back, swam in silence, for he was short of breath, but soon he asked:
" By the way, I hope you have got your liver with you ? "
Now the monkey was not smart like Jellyfish, but he he kept his wits about him.
"Erm, and why do you ask that ?" he inquired
"Well, " said Jellyfish, "the Queen is really poorly and the doctors say she can only be saved by swallowing the liver of a live monkey. "
At this the monkey exclaimed, "Oh dear me, what a thousand pities ! I left my hanging out to air at the top of the coconot palm. I think we had better hurry back and get it at once."
"We must indeed, " said the Jellyfish. And back they went.
A s soon as they arrived back at the palm, the monkey was away to the top, and then he called down.
"Go away, stupid ! I wont part with my liver for any Queen, in the sea or out. "
Then to clinch the arguement he threw nut at Jellyfish till he ran into the sea.
All his knees knocked together as he told the tale of his failure, and the Dragon King smoked with rage. When he had stammered out his last word the Dragon King roared to his servants:
" Beat him ! Break him to within an inch of his life ! Break every bone in his body ! In fact beat him to a jelly !"
" And that's it, the end of the story. And poor Jellyfish, ..... well, sad to say, he really did become a jelly-fish.

Was an American poet well known for his light verse. At the time of his death in 1971, the New York Times said his "droll verse with its unconventional rhymes made him the country's best-known producer of humorous poetry".
I love Ogden Nash, and the wonderful Eugene Field. The Tale of the Custard Dragon obviously appeals to me more than most, due to my own books which are all about Dragons and Yourds, and strange beasties. I hope to have the third book finished before the summer of 2010.

The Tale of the Custard Dragon

Belinda lived in a little white house,
With a little black kitten and a little grey mouse,
And a little yellow dog and a little red wagon,
And a realio, trulio, little pet dragon.

Now the name of the little black kitten was Ink,
And the little grey mouse, she called her Blink,
And the little yellow dog was sharp as Mustard,
But the dragon was a coward, and she called him Custard.

Custard the dragon had big sharp teeth,
And spikes on top of him and scales underneath,
Mouth like a fireplace, chimney for a nose,
And realio, trulio, daggers on his toes.

   Do you think the Red Indians would know of Robin Hood, or maybe, Camelot and Merlin, not to mention Arthur and Lancelot. Many of the Myths of the World are very similar in different ways !!! I'm sure you know what I mean. Anyway I have taken the story of Robin Hood and Merlin to the Red Man's America, and I have brought a little tale of the Iroquois Indians back to Camelot. THE LITTLE ELVES OF DARKNESS
a tale that the Iroquois tell their children.

   THE little Elves of Darkness, so says the old Iroquois Grandmother, were wise and mysterious. They dwelt under the Earth, where were deep forests and broad plains. There they kept captive all the evil things that wished to injure human beings,-the venomous snakes, the wicked spiders, and the fearful monsters. Sometimes one of these evil creatures escaped and rushed upward to the bright, pure air, and spread its poisonous breath over the Upper World. But such happenings were rare, for the Elves of Darkness were faithful and strong, and did not willingly allow the wicked beasts and reptiles to harm human beings and the growing things.
When the night was lighted by the Moon's soft rays, and the woods of the Upper World were sweet with the odour of the Spring flowers, then the Elves of Darkness left the Under World, and creeping from their holes, held a festival in the woods. And under many a tree where the blades of grass had refused to grow, the Little People danced until rings of green sprang up under their feet. And to the festival came the Elves of Light,-among them the Tree-Elves, Flower-Elves, and Fruit-Elves. They too danced and made merry.

But when the moonlight faded away, and day began to break, then the Elves of Darkness scampered back to their holes, and returned once more to the Under World, while the Elves of Light began their daily tasks.

For in the Springtime these Little People of Light hid in sheltered places. They listened to the complaints of the seeds that lay covered in the ground, and they whispered to the Earth until the seeds burst their pods and sent their shoots up to the light. Then the little Elves wandered through the woods bidding all growing things look up to the Sun.

The Tree-Elves tended the trees, unfolding their leaves, and feeding their roots with sap from the Earth. The Flower-Elves unwrapped the baby buds, and tinted the petals of the opening flowers, and played with the Butterflies and Bees.

But the busiest of all were the Fruit-Elves. Their greatest care in the Spring was the Strawberry Plant. When the ground softened from the frost, the Fruit-Elves loosened the soil around each Strawberry root, that its shoots might push through to the light. They shaped the plant's leaves, and turned its blossoms toward the warm rays of the Sun. They trained its runners, and helped the timid fruit to form. They painted the luscious berry, and bade it ripen. And when the first Strawberries blushed on the vines, these guardian Elves protected them from the evil insects that had escaped from the world of darkness underground.

The old Iroquois Grandmother tells how once, when the fruit first came to earth, the Evil One, Hahgwehdaetgah, stole the Strawberry Plant, and carried it to his gloomy cave, where he hid it away. And there it lay until a tiny sunbeam pierced the damp mould, and finding the little vine, carried it back to its sunny fields. And ever since then the Strawberry Plant has lived and thrived in the fields and woods. But the Fruit-Elves, fearing lest the Evil One should one day steal the vine again, watch day and night over their favourite. And when the Strawberries ripen, the Elves give the juicy, fragrant fruit to the Iroquois children as they gather the Spring flowers in the woods.

Hahgwedaetgah

Iroquois Creator of Evil & Ruler of the Underworld

HAHGWEHDAETGAH: A North American myth of the Iroquois describes Hahgwehdaetgah, the creator of evil and ruler of the underworld. The Iroquois believe that the kingdom of Hahgwehdaetgah lies at the bottom of an abyss below the earth. It is filled with the broken bodies of enemy warriors slain in battle. The realm is one of despair, regret, and an overwhelming sense of failure, but not of physical suffering.

Hahgwehdaetgah and his twin brother Hahgwehdiyu, a good god, were born of the creator goddess. Hahgwehdaetgah killed his mother during childbirth and then went on to create all things vile: horrible monsters, fierce beasts, and all manner of plagues and disasters. He was despised by all other creatures and by his virtuous twin.

Eventually the two brothers fought a battle to determine who would rule the earth. Hahgwehdaetgah tried to use trickery, but the good god knew his brother's evil ways and was able to
defeat him with an enchanted arrow. Hahgwehdiyu exiled his brother to the underworld, where he oversaw a kingdom of half-man, half-monster spirits. They are shape-shifters who can return to earth to terrorize the living. Hahgwehdaetgah also became overlord of the dead.
